Canadian Entrepreneurs Col. Sam McLaughlin

Col. Sam was a Canadian businessman who started the McLaughlin Motor Car Company in 1907.

He is regarded as one of the founders of the Canadian automotive industry; and a key person who brought General Motors to Canada. He built his first carriage in Enniskillen, Ontario and then moved his business to Oshawa. The McLaughlin Carriage Company, 1904, was the biggest in the British Empire. It soon evolved into General Motors of Canada.

Sam was a philanthropist and his generosity has never been matched by another Canadian. He lived to be 101 when he died in 1972. At that time he was still Chairman of GM Canada.

He was well known for still going into his GM office daily to do some work until he died. His title Colonel was from his close association with the Ontario Regiment.
