ENTREPRENEUR SUCCESS STORY Tim Horton
Younger Canadians may not remember that Tim Horton (1930-1974) was originally a hockey player who had 24 years in the National Hockey League. He played for Toronto Maple Leafs, New York Rangers, Pittsburgh Penguins and Buffalo Sabres. In 2017 he was named one of the top 100 Greatest NHL Players in history.
In 1964 Tim opened a doughnut shop in Hamilton Ontario. By 1974, Tim Hortons had 40 locations in Canada and by the early 21st century there were over 3,500 restaurants in Canada and the United States. By 2022 the multinational chain had 5,352 restaurants in 15 countries.
Tim’s new partner, Ron Joyce, a former Hamilton police constable, joined Tim in 1967. When Tim died in 1974, Joyce bought shares from the family, and took over the company for the sum of $1,000,000. Tim Horton’s promotes itself through the “Tim Horton Children’s Foundation” which sends underprivileged children to 6 high class summer camps in ON, NS, AB, MB, QC and Kentucky in the USA.
Tim Hortons is owned today by Restaurant Brands International in Canada .

- Imax [1971]: debuted at Ontario Place in Toronto; “North of Superior”.
- Blackberry [1984]: founded to specialize in cybersecurity. Software.
- Peanut Butter [1884]: the first commercial patent was issued in Quebec.
- Canada Dry Ginger Ale [1904]: soft drink company owned by Dr. Pepper.
- Nanaimo Bar [1953}: sweet bar named after the British Columbia city.
- Snow Blower [1884]: Arthur Sicard first sold this invention in 1925.
- Gas Mask [1915]: the Mark IV was invented by Cluny Macpherson.
Easy Off [1932]: oven cleaner was invented by H.McCool in Regina, SK. - Jolly Jumper [1910]: invented by indigenous mother Susan Poole.
- 5-Pin Bowling [1909]: devised in Toronto by Thomas F. Ryan.
- Wonderbra [1964]: Louis Parker developed the first push-up bra.
Insulin [1923]: co-discoverer of insulin with colleague Charles Best.
Woman Entrepreneur
Tonia Jahshan founded her company “Steeped Tea” , a Canadian born a direct sales company after appearing on the Canadian entrepreneur tv show, Dragon’s Den.
Tonia began her company in her basement and turned her operation into a multi million dollar Profit 500 company.
Chatelaine magazine voted Tonia the #1 female entrepreneur of Canada in 2016. Steeped Tea is one of the fastest growing direct selling companies in Canada specializing in home tea parties.

BUSINESS MAGAZINES
Canadian Business magazine is the longest published business magazine and it is based in Toronto, Canada. Founded in 1927, it ceased printing its magazine at the end of 2016. Since 2017 it has been publishing online only. Rogers Communications acquired the company in 1944 and sold it in 2019.
The Globe and Mail publishes Report on Business Magazine. Financial Post Magazine is published by the Financial Post in its newspaper. The Canadian Business Journal magazine is published by George Media.
Entrepreneur is an American magazine and website that has stories about entrepreneurs. It was fist published in 1977 and is based in California. It publishes 10 issues a year through subscription and on newsstands.
